AS we look towards 2016 and beyond Floridians for Freedom is pleased to announce our full-court press towards the ballot continues. When we launched the petition in August 2015, we knew it would take a Herculean effort to collect over 680,000 verified signatures by the first day of February. It has never been done by an unpaid volunteer organization. They have actually set the bar for citizen’s initiatives so high, it is almost impossible for a group like ours to make the ballot.
We are not discouraged. We know according to the national Household Survey over 7% of Floridians surveyed admitted to using cannabis in the last thirty days. That translates to well over 1 million current cannabis consumers in Florida (willing to admit it to a survey none-the-less). We know that each of those cannabis users has Florida voters who love them. We are asking for the help of our allies in disseminating our petition to their supporters. We’re asking our members and subscribers to collect 10-25 or more to help us reach the first hurdle. Make a donation now to support this effort.
Floridians for Freedom doesn’t have a millionaire special interest driving us. When we created the Right of Adults to Cannabis, our legal team searched for the broadest language that would make Supreme Court Review. We chose to protect the consumer, not put business protection into the Constitution. We chose as few details as necessary to establish cannabis as a legal for anyone 21 and older – in whatever form.
The first hurdle is to collect over 68,000 valid signatures, with a percentage coming from all 27 Congressional districts, necessary to trigger the review by the court and the budget impact conference. No one knows what the Supreme Court will do. The Court is under no obligation to hear the case in a timely manner. We must continue to collect the more than 680,000 verified signatures by the February 1, 2016 deadline or we’ll have to wait until the 2018 ballot to vote on the Right of Adults to Cannabis.
When we wrote the Right of Adults to Cannabis initiative, we wrote a document that can withstand time. Once we began collecting signatures, each signature is good for two years. If we miss the deadline for reaching the 2016 ballot, our signatures remain valid. In essence, we have until August 26, 2017 to collect the nearly 700,000 valid signatures before the first signature is wasted.
If we see the petition metastasize throughout the state, if the million people who love a cannabis consumer will stand up for them and sign the petition, we’re ready to run a campaign in 2016 to get more than sixty percent of the vote.
If you believe cannabis prohibition is a failure. If you believe treating yourself is a right, please support our campaign. Click here to make your best donation.
We need your time and your treasure. Donate what you can afford. We’re running ads, buying supplies and arming volunteers with the materials necessary to educate voters.
If you don’t want to wait until 2018 to vote for the Right of Adults to Cannabis, act now to support this effort. Download the petition, make copies, fill them out, mail them in and ask a friend or 50 to do the same. This is the only initiative that will give you a right to possess, use and cultivate cannabis for your own personal use, while allowing the legislature to create rules governing purchase and transfer.
